Subscriptions & self-service

This page covers what a subscriber can do about their own subscriptions, from the web UI (/me) and by email. If you manage a list rather than just being on it, see The web UI and Moderation instead.

Delivery modes

Every subscription has a delivery preference:

  • Regular — each post as it arrives.
  • Digest — a batched compilation, daily or weekly (per-list setting), sent only when there are new messages.
  • Nomail — delivery paused without unsubscribing. Useful for a vacation or a temporary email problem. You stay subscribed; nothing is delivered until you switch back.

Switch modes on the /me page, or by email: set digest, set regular, set nomail to dev-request@example.com.

Subscription states

A subscription is Pending, Active, Held, or Disabled:

  • Pending — you requested but haven’t confirmed your address yet (first half of double opt-in).
  • Active — confirmed; posts are delivered.
  • Held — confirmed, but awaiting an owner’s approval (moderated lists only).
  • Disabled — delivery stopped because too many messages to your address bounced. Not deleted — you can re-enable.

Re-enabling a disabled subscription

If your address bounced too often, the subscription is disabled and you stop receiving posts. Re-enable from the /me page (it shows “Bounces (N) disabled delivery”), or by emailing re-enable to the -request address. Re-enabling resets the bounce count, so it won’t immediately disable again.

Unsubscribing

  • From /me, or by the one-click /unsubscribe page (which confirms you own the address before removing anything).
  • By email: unsubscribe to dev-request@example.com, or write to dev-unsubscribe@example.com.

Email commands, in short

Everything above is also doable by email to dev-request@example.com: help, which, info, set regular|digest|nomail, re-enable, unsubscribe, who (owners/moderators), and contact. Full detail on the Email commands page.

A note on ownership

Roles (Owner, Moderator, Designated Sender) are separate from subscriptions. You can be an owner of a list you’re not subscribed to, and a member who holds no role. Roles are granted per list, by the owner.
